Commercial Printing

Catalogues, brochures and art books, on the same presses as your books.

Commercial printing at Renjie covers three things: catalogues 8–240 pages, saddle-stitched brochures and booklets 8–64 pages, and case-bound art and photography books. All offset-printed on the same colour-managed Roland presses as our book work, from 500 copies. When a title and its 64-page catalogue are printed together, the colour matches — because they never left the same floor.

What commercial print do we produce?

Three product families, one binding logic each: catalogues are page-count driven, brochures are fold driven, art books are structure driven. Page count, fold pattern and sewing are what decide the price, not the cover artwork.

Why one plant matters

Why print the catalogue and the book in the same plant?

Because a cover blue that is not the same blue is invisible until the catalogue and the book sit side by side. Most publishers buy books from one printer and catalogues from a local shop — then discover the mismatch at the trade fair. Ours are printed on the same presses, to the same G7-style calibration and the same ink set, so a brand colour holds across the whole set. According to Idealliance, the point of G7 calibration is that presses of different makes "align to a common visual appearance" — running both jobs in one plant makes that alignment a default rather than a negotiation. The underlying ink and paper aims are specified in ISO 12647-2.

Honest scope

What do we make — and what do we turn down?

We make

Offset catalogues, saddle-stitched booklets, folded brochures, art and photography books — plus their covers, jackets and slipcases.

We don't make

Large-format posters, signage, direct-mail personalisation and web-to-print short runs of 20–50. Different equipment, different economics — we'll say so rather than quote badly.

Our honest edge

Commercial work here exists so a book publisher never needs a second supplier for the catalogue, the brochure and the box the book ships in.

Before you order

How much can a catalogue or booklet actually hold?

How many pages can a saddle-stitched booklet take?

8 to 64 pages, and the count must be a multiple of four. Saddle stitching folds sheets over a wire spine, so the outer pages creep outward as the count rises; above roughly 48 pages we add creep compensation in the imposition. Beyond 64 pages the spine starts to look like a wedge and perfect binding is the honest answer.

Perfect bound or saddle stitched for a 96-page catalogue?

Perfect bound. A 96-page block is too thick to fold reliably over wire, and a squared spine also gives you printable spine text — which a saddle-stitched catalogue cannot carry. Saddle stitch wins below roughly 48 pages on both unit cost and lay-flat handling.

Can a 5,000-copy catalogue and 500 hardcovers run on one schedule?

Yes. They are separate print runs — different paper, different press time — but they share a colour standard and one production schedule, so they ship together. Splitting the colour work across two suppliers is what creates the mismatch this page is about.

Which file should I send for a catalogue?

A press-ready PDF/X-4 with 3 mm bleed, trim marks and fonts embedded, in CMYK unless a Pantone is specified. Our 20-point preflight checklist covers the failures we see most often, and the CMYK vs Pantone guide explains when a spot colour is worth the extra unit.
